Point standings shakeup

The developing story is the point standings that will determine who gets invited to the 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series from this Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Opens series.

Here are reasons why. None of the leaders had a good Day 1. In fact, some are in danger of falling completely out of the running for one of the five coveted spots.

Here’s a snapshot. Noted in paranthesis is the current tournament rank for each angler after Day 1. The names are in descending rank of points order, prior to the tournament start.

Cody Pike (109)

Chad Pipkens (55)

David Dudley (50)

Greg Dipalma (123)

Alvin Shaw (98)

Austin Felix (124)

Jeff Lugar (103)

The biggest gainer is tournament leader Jesse Tacoronte (1). Another big mover–and big news on this entire story–is Alton Jones, Jr. (11).

According to an earlier blog post from today by photographer Garrick Dixon, Jones has about 15 pounds in the livewell. Based on the above, that catch will certainly move him up. Now, we have the distinct possiblity of a father-son in the Elite Series.

Another cool developing angle of all this is Sam George (22) and 19th in the point standings. Photographer Ronnie Moore reports in his blog that George has over 20 pounds. That not only makes the young pro a contender for a Top 12 spot and more. George’s dream is to fish the Elite Series.
