No locking down early

Steve Bowman and I were driving to put in at the Kerr Lake pool and photograph all the anglers there, including most of the leaders. Before we’d launched the boat, Dale Hightower called — thank goodness.

“There’s a barge in the lock and nobody is going to be able to lock down for at least an hour,” Hightower said. That throws a curveball to a lot of anglers’ best-laid plans. Lee Livesay, who locked down to Kerr yesterday, mentioned there were an estimated 70 boats in the lock when he went through on Day 1.

Bass tournament fishing is all about adjusting to changing conditions, fishing the moment, as the anglers like to say. Day 2 has begun with an unwelcome surprise. We’ll see who adjusts.
