Lure is the key for DeFoe

Where Ott DeFoe is fishing isn’t a secret. The Onalaska low-water dam has been a popular spot for anglers all week. But DeFoe has been quiet about the lure he’s using.

“Where I’m fishing, other guys are fishing, have fished and probably will fish, and it’s very bait specific,” said DeFoe in explaining his tournament-leading success at that spot.

If you’ve watched Bassmaster LIVE, you know what DeFoe is doing, but we don’t reveal those details here without the angler’s permission, and DeFoe isn’t ready to give that up. That 6-pound, 1-ounce big bass of the tournament DeFoe caught in the final hour yesterday convinced him that he’s got a potential tournament-winning spot and pattern. But it can be a frustrating place to fish.

“The place I’m fishing has got ’em, it absolutely does,” DeFoe said at Friday’s weigh-in. “But I’m missing and losing more than I’m catching. The water is moving so fast they’re not eating it good.”
