Lucas: one pass, five bass (and a 5-pounder)

One pass, five bass. That’s the morning thus far for Justin Lucas. And he just boated a 5-pounder.

Lucas is feeling much better as jet airplanes roar overhead from nearby Reagan National Airport.

“I’ve caught better weight right now than I did all day yesterday,” he added.

That indeed is what happened after Lucas made the first pass down the pier. Right now, the tide is rushing out. Lucas is fishing parallel to the pier for a good reason. The bass are holding on the shady edge, using that as an ambush point for baitfish–and his lure.

All week he’s talked about learning this spot as he goes. That’s a wise move and something the average angler should pick up. The lesson learned is a spot doesn’t always go cold. You just need to explore the opportunity to find a pattern-within-a-pattern.

Lucas did that by tapping into the immediately surrounding area that features a grass flat along the perimeter of the pier. He caught a key bass there yesterday and on Day 2.

“Yesterday the south wind pushing against the outgoing tide hurt me,” he said. “Today it should get better and position the bass better on the pilings.”

So far so good.
