When Kevin VanDam speaks, bass anglers listen. So it was compelling to hear what VanDam had to say about Sam Rayburn Reservoir at yesterday’s anglers meeting.
“It’s the best lake in the country right now,” he said. “It has not been that great for me (during practice this week). But I saw it a month ago, and I know what’s here. They’re going to blast ’em and show the world just how great this lake is. It’s just in a really good place right now.
“The grass has really come back here, throughout a big part of the lake. That’s the difference between here and Toledo Bend – at Toledo it hasn’t. And the (fishing) pressure has caught up over there, but not here. It will though, after we show them what’s here this week.
“We’re late enough in the year that people won’t make travel trips to come here, like they do during the spawn. But they will next spring.”
There’s one other factor that will help the 109 Elite Series anglers display the bass fishing at Sam Rayburn’s 114,500 acres this week – lack of major competition.
“The saving grace for us this week is there’s a McDonald’s big bass tournament at Toledo, so there will be a thousand boats over there instead of over here,” VanDam said.
