KVD dominates big day

The most impressive stat in Kevin VanDam’s big Day 1 at Toledo Bend wasn’t his five-bass total of 29 pounds, 5 ounces. And it wasn’t his 8-5 big bass of the day. It was the fact that KVD could have weighed the four smallest bass in his bag and still been in 10th place with 21-0. That’s a 5 1/4-pound average.

KVD’s heroics came on a day when almost everyone else caught ’em too – just not as big as the one’s VanDam caught – as 99 of 108 anglers weighed five-bass limits. One of those who didn’t was last week’s winner at Wheeler Lake, Takahiro Omori, who had only three keepers, but they weighed 11-4, which put him in 86th place.

The Top 50 cut will take place at the conclusion of today’s weigh-in. After Day 1, Skeet Reese and Greg Hackney are tied for 50th place with 14-11.

There were 517 bass weighed-in yesterday totaling 1,556-6, which is a 3-pound average.
