The gnarly 16,000-acre Sparkleberry Swamp could be a player this week on Santee Cooper. Shady and silent, the “Swamp” is so dense that it’s easy to lose your way in the network of narrow sloughs and channels that extend through the watery forest. It’s also a bass fisherman’s dream.
Andy Crawford, who is from swampy south Louisiana, is in the swamp now, doing his best to see Frank Talley through the lens of his camera.
“It’s much denser than anything I have ever seen in Louisiana,” he said. “Frank is just 20 yards from me and it’s difficult to see him.”
Talley just landed his second keeper, weighing in at 3 pounds. Counting the other keeper in the livewell, he estimated his weight to be around 4 pounds.
“This is such a target-rich environment that I believe there are bass in here that have never seen a lure,” said Talley.
