Ike answering Avena’s challenge

Mike Iaconelli has changed horses for the last hour, switching from swimming a jig in pencil reeds for largemouth bass to casting a jerkbait along a sloping sand flat for smallmouth bass. And it’s paying off in a big way. Iaconelli has caught three smallmouth in a row, two of which helped him – a 2-10 and a 2-11 – cull up to 24 pounds. Avena has 21-0.

“I totally switched patterns,” Iaconelli said. “You’ve got to be fluid in fishing.”

Iaconelli saw a half-dozen smallmouth follow his bait here yesterday. But a couple of northern pike bites seemed to shutdown the bass.

“There’s a mega-school there,” he said just now. “It’s that big wolfpack I saw yesterday. Today they’re biting.”
