On the “hunt” for big bites

By now, most anglers have turned their attention from woods to water, but co-angler Jerrod Albright described what he sees as a strong correlation. Essentially, he and his Day-1 boater targeted prespawn fish that were “moving around a whole lot.”

In such scenarios, a mobile strategy might sound sensible — cover water and hope to run into them. However, Albright said they did their best when they staked out attractive spots and fished patiently.

“My guy was parked offshore (in Lake Toho) on some good structure — a little bit of grass, a little bit of shell and we just had to cast around and work the baits slowly,” Albright said. “The fish are cycling through there and heading to the bank.

“The best fishermen right now are deer hunters who will sit and wait and sit and wait. Every now and then, if you’re in the right spot, new females are pushing through these key areas and we were parked on one of them today and I caught a 7-11 and a 4 and my boater caught a 5.”

Hailing from form Kissimmee, Fla., Albright started Day 2 in second place, just 4 ounces behind his team partner Ron Shakespeare of St. Cloud, Fla. Albright leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass standings among co-anglers with his 7-11.
