Is anyone surprised to see Ott DeFoe near the top of the scoreboard? Of course not, considering his hot streak.
Just two weeks ago the current Toyota Angler of the Year leader scored a fifth-place finish at the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Before then it was a second at Lake Okeechobee and 10th at Lake Cherokee.
Let’s drill down, though, to the Classic and Okeechobee finishes, both held during the spawn. At Lake Conroe DeFoe caught a key 9-pounder on a prototype topwater bait under development by Rapala. He also performed well on Okeechobee with a Terminator frog.
Put both those lures together, and his skills for catching spawning bass, and that underscores why DeFoe will be a top challenger this week.
Actually, the hot streak started last year. That’s when DeFoe scored his first Bassmaster Elite Series win on the Mississippi River in early September.
