Hite with Nos. 3 and 4

Brett Hite moved to his third set of North Grand Island Bridge pilings to catch his third fish. It was a 3-pound, 10-ounce smallmouth bass, which he fought carefully for a few minutes in this swift current.

There are 14 pairs of huge concrete bridge pilings here – one under the southbound lanes and one under the northbound lanes. Hite said he fished only five of them yesterday, and none more than once, when he had four fish for 11-7, which was the biggest bag of the first-round, three-hour sessions.

Hite is throwing his drop shot rig on new 12-pound test Sunline XT braid.

“It came out at ICAST,” said Hite of last week’s annual fishing tackle trade show in Orlando, Fla. “It’s super slick. You can cast a long way with it.”

He’s using a 7-pound test Sunline FC Sniper fluorocarbon leader, joined to the braid with an Alberto knot. As noted in a previous blog, Hite is using a 1/4-ounce Reins Tungsten weight, with his hook positioned about 18 inches above the weight.

As I was typing this, Hite landed his fourth smallmouth bass of the morning – a 2-5 – giving him 9-5 so far.
