Higher water would have helped

It’s not like Grand Lake is low. The current level is 742.08 feet above sea level, .08 higher than the “normal” or “conservation pool” mark. It’s just that early spring rains often have the lake level several feet higher. If that had been the case, the bass fishing at Grand Lake would have been off the charts this week, according to Kevin VanDam.

“If the water was high, you’d see freak-show stuff here, where you could focus on targets,” VanDam said. “The challenging part now is they’re hard to get to. A lot of them are behind docks and cables. It’s just hard to get where they want to be.”

Indeed, the back corners of boat docks have been a key point for several anglers. And to hit those spots, you have to pitch under or over dock anchoring cables, and often slide your boat under a cable to get in position. However, that’s the only factor that’s out of place for great bass fishing at Grand Lake.

“You’ll see some monumental stringers,” VanDam said. “This is one of the best lakes in the country.”
