Gustafson’s technique

We’ve settled on Jeff Gustafson this morning. He’s one of the triplets from Canada. Besides covering the leaders to see what they are doing it’s often cool to watch a guy do something completely out of the ordinary.

We’ve got that with Gustafson. He caught a heavy sack yesterday of 23-plus pounds on a technique I’ve never heard of. In these parts they call it fluffing.

These guys take a light-weight jig on 4- to 6-pound line and basically drift it or float it along a seam where the current is moving around a shoal or a set of boulders. The hair jig more or less suspends in the water column and floats like a leech or other piece of food as the current does all the work.

It seems like it’s as close to fly fishing as you can get in the bass fishing world.

I thought it would be great to learn more. To this point he’s hooked up twice. He lost the first one. The second was a keeper but less than 2-pounds so he tossed it back.
