“The Flogger” handy on St. Lawrence

If you’ve been watching “Bassmaster LIVE,” you’ve seen both Chris and Cory Johnston stick their faces in what looks like the narrow end of a traffic cone when the wide end of the cone is in the water. It’s known as The Flogger, reportedly because it can help you flog the fish. Austin Felix was using one earlier today, as seen in the photo above. Compared to all the bells and whistles associated with today’s fish-locating sonar, it’s a primitive device. No batteries are needed for The Flogger.

It’s a tool that simply cuts the ripples and glare off the water surface, allowing an angler to spot fish in the deep, clear water found in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Elite Series angler Chad Pipkens has been using one since 2011 and is credited with helping popularize the device for bass fishing. You could achieve the same view with a scuba diving mask, but you’d have to stick your head in the water.
