As good as Seth Feider has been over the first two days at Mille Lacs Lake in leading with 50 pounds, 3 ounces, he anticipates being better today.
“I’m saving some good stuff for Sunday,” said Feider after Friday’s weigh-in. “I fish here all the time. The amount of hours I’ve got on this lake is extensive. I weighed four fish today that I caught off spots where I’d never caught one before.”
That’s just it. Feider has been finding new places to catch big smallmouth bass, and he still hasn’t hit some of his favorite spots.
Feider did maintain his prediction again Friday that there won’t be a 30-pound bag caught in this tournament because, “They’re just not biting good enough. You’ve got to weed through about 75 fish in order to catch 30 pounds.”
In other words, Matt Herren would have to more than double the 33 he caught Friday that weighed a total of 120-11, when he had a best five of 24-9. Takahiro Omori’s Day 1 total of 26-7 is the heaviest bag of the tournament so far.
So when will the smallmouth bite turn on at Mille Lacs?
“In two weeks it will be insane,” Feider said.
