Christie comes up

The Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race is getting very competitive. That’s good news for the fans, not so much for the anglers jockeying for first place.

Yesterday the big climber was Jacob Wheeler, who took the lead away from Brandon Palaniuk by just one point. Wheeler, as expected, threw caution to the wind and headed into Lake Erie.

Could today be Jason Christie’s turn to turn up the heat?

Christie just moved into second place according to BASSTrakk. Wheeler is way down in 18th place. Palaniuk is 73rd place.

Of course, and after what we witnessed today, those lower climbing anglers could shoot to the top of the scoreboard this afternoon.

Christie is among the contingent of anglers wanting the wind to blow. The reason is for rate of drift. Christie is setting drifts upstream of his chosen area, allowing the wind to move his boat over his best spots in a given area.

Christie also has history on his side. One of the best shallow water frog anglers on the planet won here in 2012 at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open.
