Check your drags after long runs

Day-1 leader Brock Mosley’s strategy of running approximately two hours west to the Houston area has paid off again with another productive day that has him neck-and-neck with Jason Christie at the top of the (unofficial) BassTrakk standings.

His long-distance game plan is not without risk and potential pitfalls; fuel consumption, potential mechanical issues due to long runs across the big waters of Galveston Bay and the high winds expected this afternoon.

Notwithstanding these looming considerations, the Mississippi pro who placed second at the last Elite event on Pickwick Lake pointed out a sneaky little issue that can bite an angler at exactly the wrong moment.

“If you make a rough ride, check your drags (upon arrival) because they will slip,” Mosley said.

Case in point: Mosley put down the 1/2-ounce ChatterBait he’d been using to mix up his presentations with a buzzbait when a keeper fish took a liking to the first cast. Mosley set the hook and momentarily struggled to come tight.

Quickly realizing the drag issue, he managed to get the fish in the boat, but acknowledged what he termed a mental error.

Good thing that didn’t happen on yesterday’s 5 1/2-pound kicker.
