Can it happen again?

Thursday’s phenomenal catches, that is. Some say yes.

That’s a tall order. When deciding who needs to be interviewed for Bassmaster.com we typically set a benchmark weight. Yesterday it began really quickly with 20 pounds, then 24 pounds. All we could do was shake heads as more bigger bags came across the scales. Seven bags over 25 pounds. I cannot recall a time when we passed up interviews for a guy with 24 pounds in his weigh-in bag. But we did.

“I’m going to keep thinking big, because catching 100 pounds to win is probably the mark to shoot for.”

That’s what David Walker told me this morning. Alton Jones predicted that it will take 40 pounds to make a check. That’s incredible. Then he added, “It looks better on paper, because it’s not like the guys who did well yesterday caught 50 or 100 smallmouth. Some only had 7 or 8 bites.”

Comments about how bigger in size the smallmouth are this year compared to last year and the prior year were common yesterday.

“But it’s not like the fish are on a treadmill and some kind of protein diet,” added Keith Combs. “I think we are just here at the right time, with the fish schooled up and feeding before fall.”
