Buddy Gross with a spinning rod?

“Bassmaster LIVE” showed Buddy Gross landing a 2-pounder on a spinning rod, a fishing style that he’s not known for, to say the least. Let’s put it this way, he didn’t have a spinning rod in his hand when he caught 27-11 the final day to win at Alabama’s Lake Eufaula in June.

“A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do to catch a limit,” Gross said. “Then we’ll go swinging.”

Gross said he made a gamble in choosing his approach today. He practiced one day on cypress trees, which produced only one bass, but a good one. He practiced another day on brushpiles and caught several 4-pounders.

“I’m going to catch ’em out of brush,” Gross said. “If they don’t bite there, I’m in trouble.”

There’s another species biting in the brushpiles, some as deep at 19 feet. Gross said he caught a few 3-pound crappie on a 1-ounce spinnerbait.
