How much will the blueback herring population play into this competition? The blanks are still yet to be filled in but the answers will likely be this baitfish will indeed be a factor.
“It doesn’t take long for a school to fire up,” observed Chad Pipkens. “That’s good when the bracket starts and we only have a three-hour session to fish.”
That makes herring a wild card factor. With little to go on the most obvious place to be are the points—and there are plenty in this lake. The bass, mostly suspended and adrift right now, will gang up on points to use as ambush points. When the blueback herring cross the point they become an easy meal for the bass. The shad, like the bass, are spread out and have yet to concentrate and migrate into the creeks, or ditches.
Another factor contributing to all the above is power-generated current. That ends at 9 a.m., ending any pattern depending on current in the main lake.
