Blame Day 2 on the lightning

The argument about whether Day 2’s overcast conditions would produce better fishing than Day 1’s sunshine was settled yesterday, and Day 1 was the winner. (Therefore, Steve Kennedy owes Hank Cherry a steak dinner.)

However, the thunder and lightning that delayed the start Saturday added an unforeseen element to the argument. Bass don’t like thunder and lightning.

“Fish in the spring do not like lightning,” said Gerald Swindle. “Fish do not bite again until the sun comes out. State law.”

Swindle summed it up as only Swindle can, and based on Saturday’s results, he was right on the money. The overcast conditions most of the day didn’t produce anything near what was predicted, and the best fishing, especially for bigger bass, didn’t take place until the final hours when the sun reappeared.

The following is a comparison of Day 1 and Day 2 at Lake Hartwell:

Bass  Lbs.-Oz.  Avg. Wt.  Limits  Big bass
Day 1 255 684-12 2,68 lbs. 51  6 lbs., 11 oz.
Day 2 245   584-12  2.39 lbs. 45  5 lbs., 7 oz.
