AOY: A punch and a counter punch

With Greg Hackney jumping into first place on Lake Texoma you’d think he’s starting to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field in the Toyota Angler of the Year race. But that’s not the case. Gerald Swindle, who’s second in AOY, finished Texoma Day 2 in third place. That’s a strong counter punch to Hackney’s big Day 2. Hackney
has 572 AOY points, while Swindle is 30 points back at 542.

That’s not a huge lead. One bad tournament and Hackney comes back to earth. But at the same time it may be tough for Swindle to make up a lot of ground. He and Hackney have similar strengths. Both are great shallow water junk fishermen. When a tournament sets up well for Swindle, it should also be in Hackney’s wheelhouse.

Next up on the schedule is Cayuga in New York State. Hackney won the Elite there in 2014. I believe he found success there fishing one or two big grass beds. That location is now common knowledge. He’ll need a new game plan to do well again there. It’s going to be exciting to see how this plays out.
