We have been standing around the corner from the take off watching the boats running. Our vantage point allows us to see which way the boats are headed.
If they took a left, they were headed to the Waccamaw, Black River or PeeDee rivers and all the points west and north of Georgetown.
If they went right they were headed to the Cooper and/or Santee Rivers.
Those headed right are the gamblers, the ones taking a chance on a long run during an all ready shortened day.
While we waited as the storm rolled through we pontificated that few boats would make that trek. In an area where you can only hope for 3 hours at best of fishing and possibly less with unstable weather and promised strong winds it seemed likely few of the anglers would take that chance.
We were wrong. We didn’t watch every boat pass. But after two thirds or more flew by, there was at least 35 of them willing to roll the dice today.
It sounds crazy on the front end. But we’ve visited enough with the anglers in the field to know that if you pull up to the right spot, your first 5 casts could be strong enough to carry you into Saturday with a check. And if you can back it up in the next three days all the way to the winners circle.
Two thirds of the field are banking on those guys not getting it done today. Many of those will eventually try to make it to the Cooper River but will wait for favorable conditions. Either way we are headed to Charleston and the Cooper to see who actually makes it and if they do, who actually finds that magical five casts.
