BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Being crowned the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour champion is the ultimate dream for many B.A.S.S. Nation members, but only a handful will have a chance to flirt with that fate each year. For most, winning big at the local level is the next best thing. Thanks to the B.A.S.S. Nation Alliance program, that’s a far more attainable goal.
In addition to regular payouts from the B.A.S.S. Nation, a Nation angler fishing from an Alliance-qualified rig can cash a significant bonus check for winning or finishing near the top in tournaments, while the program also offers rebates and other incentives to Nation members and anglers competing in the Strike King Bassmaster High School Series and Strike King Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops. Plus, this isn’t your typical contingency program. A Nation angler with an older boat and outboard can still qualify, as long as they’re the original owner. If you bought it new, an eligible rig stays eligible for as long as it can be backed into the water and fished out of.
The basics
The Alliance program is a group effort from some of the marine industry’s leading brands to support anglers at the local level through the B.A.S.S. Nation. Those brands include Mercury Marine, Ranger Boats, Nitro Boats, Triton Boats, Lowrance, RELiON and Bass Pro Shops.
To be eligible for bonus prizes, you must own and fish from a qualifying Ranger, Nitro or Triton powered by a Mercury outboard. In addition, if all electronics on the boat (graphs and trolling motor) are Lowrance, another level of bonus money kicks in. RELiON also offers bonus money if its lithium batteries provide power to the rig.
Though it has been revamped in recent years, the Alliance program isn’t a new thing. This contingency program dates back decades. And with a title sponsorship stretching back to 1998, Mercury has been right there supporting the B.A.S.S. Nation for the long haul. Michelle Kilburn, senior manager of competitive angling and sponsorships at Mercury Marine, noted that a lot has changed during that time, but Mercury’s commitment to local anglers has never wavered.
“Our desire to support grass-roots fishing is as strong as ever,” Kilburn said. “And I feel that comes down to high school and college, too. As the programs have evolved, we’ve tried to evolve the Alliance program with them. It’s our commitment to angling and the people who love and preserve the sport.”
How it works
While all model years are eligible for Alliance program bonuses, there is a tiered system for payouts based on the trail, the age of the rig, the outboard horsepower and the combination of components from eligible brands. A state championship winner could pocket as much as $4,250 in bonus money. Win a Mercury B.A.S.S. Nation Qualifier and you could pick up another $7,000 from an Alliance rig. If the B.A.S.S. Nation national champion wins out of a compatible combo, he or she could net another $32,500. And how does a $55,000 bonus sound for an Alliance angler crowned Bassmaster Classic champ?
B.A.S.S. Nation angler Rex Reagan had a pinnacle performance like this last spring. When Reagan won the 2026 Mercury B.A.S.S. Nation Qualifier at Cherokee Lake presented by Lowrance, he earned $11,481 for the win as well as $7,000 in Alliance money on top of his $8,000 Ranger Cup bonus. That’s a $26,481 payday for a $400 entry fee.
“It’s an awesome program and opportunity for all of our Nation anglers,” said GL Compton, B.A.S.S. Nation tournament manager. “This is really an awesome program if you’re a Nation angler. Yeah, there are higher bonuses if you have a newer boat, but there are also payouts for any year model.”
For a better idea of the payout opportunities, consider the state championship prizes. If you win the state championship from a 2025 or 2026 model-year Ranger, Nitro or Triton with a 250-horsepower Mercury outboard, you’ll qualify for the full $4,250 bonus. The prize money is adjusted for those model years with lower-horsepower Mercury engines. Win it from an Alliance-qualified rig of any age and you’ll get a $1,250 bonus.
Compton added that, as long as your state participates in the Alliance program, there’s no entry fee for the angler. And almost every state in the B.A.S.S. Nation does participate in the program.
Additional support
The Alliance program offers financial support to the Nation in various other ways, too. There’s a cash incentive of up to $5,000 for states that generate leads for new boat sales, a rebate opportunity for states that want to order a boat-and-engine package for a fundraiser and various discounts on oil, props and apparel. Mercury, Lowrance and RELiON also offer special discounts for state team members. And any Alliance, College Series or High School Series angler who purchases a new qualifying Triton, Ranger or Nitro boat powered by a Mercury outboard can receive a rebate of $1 per horsepower.
