Junior Championship: Day 1 weigh-in

Day 1 was a big one for Rein Golubjatnikov at the Costa Bassmaster Junior Championship presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods. The 13-year old New Yorker had some hefty surprises in store for the crowd gathered in downtown Huntingdon, Tenn. for the beginning of the two-day national championship.

Teams from 28 states and Canada are represented in the championship which is being held on Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake in northwest Tennessee. Here, a line of some of those teams begins to form at the tanks waiting for Tuesday’s 1:45 p.m. start.

It was a hot day in Huntingdon and the sun shone brightly upon the anglers for the eight hours they were on the water. The tents backstage provided relief though, as did the cup of ice water dumped on Michigan’s Josh Elsey.

Michigan’s Remington Barkley and Josh Elsey were the first to weigh in on Tuesday and they had a limit of five bass that weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces.

 Then Golubjatnikov stepped to the scales and weighed the big bass of the day – and a biggun’ it was. The 8-2 bass anchored a five-bass limit that weighed 15-13 and put him in the lead on Day 1. His dad Ken is boat captain/coach and he’s holding a 4-pound plus bass that Rein also caught on Tuesday. Golubjatnikov is fishing solo this week; the only angler in the field to do so.

Here comes the second biggest bag of the day. It was weighed by the Louisiana duo of Jordan Sylvester and Jacob Tullier who had a limit that weighed 15-1. Along with Golubjatnikov, they were the only other team that weighed in a double-digit bag on Day 1. The big bass of the bag weighed 5-7.
