John Crews, Caleb Sumrall and Tyler Rivet all understand the importance of staying in great shape to perform at their best during Bassmaster Elite Series competition. Take a look at some of the things these pros do to stay in tip-top shape.

“It’s really become a mindset thing for me,” said Rivet. “Even during the season, I try to get in the gym every day. Even if it’s just for 30 or 40 minutes, because I’m pretty much addicted to it.” </figcaption></figure>

“Strength training really helps with my confidence,” he said. “I build confidence while I’m at the gym, so when I get back on the water, I feel healthier overall.”
“Some guys don’t like to work out during practice or the event, but I feel like it helps me,” he said. “My two best years on the Elites were the years that I worked out the most.”
“I always suggest people follow the 21 day rule,” said Rivet. “If you can consistently work out and eat right for 21 days, then you’ll start to see the results and that will drive you.”

“I felt out of shape during my first year fishing the Elites,” Sumrall said. “Not being able to recover quickly after back-to-back events was my drive to get in shape and start running more to build up my cardio.” </figcaption></figure>

Over the course of 2021, Sumrall ran over 1,200 miles while continuing to build strength in the gym.

“It became a goal for me, which really helped my mindset,” he said.

“My motivation for working out is just being in overall better shape and feeling healthy, but I have seen a big return on my balance while I’m in the boat,” he said.
“My advice is to set an achievable goal,” said Sumrall. “You have to be disciplined and commit to the consistency part of it.”

“It took me a long time to comprehend this, but bass fishing is an endurance sport,” Crews said. “I train a lot of mobility and balance exercises to help with fishing specifically, but that’s not all.” </figcaption></figure>

“The other part of my workouts are focused on strength work,” he said. “When you have a strenuous workout, your muscle tissue is broken down, and at night your body recovers. If your body is used to building itself back up, then it will be much easier to recover from fishing multiple days in a row.”
“If I have an entire week to work out, I will try to hit all parts of the body,” he said. “I’ll mix it up with a mixture of strength training, athletic training and balance training.”
“It’s important for me to schedule recovery days before the Elite Series events start,” he said. “I’ll typically schedule a recovery day the day before official practice starts so I’m fully recovered for the event.”
To ensure a full recovery, Crews relies on 1st Phorm supplements.

“They make extremely high quality products that I truly recommend,” Crews said. “They don’t make the gimmick products. It’s only the premium stuff.”
