Day Two on the Sabine

Anglers have an abundance of scenic, cypress filled water to fish during the Sabine River Challenge presented by STARK Cultural Venues.

Grant Goldbeck failed to catch a keeper on Day One, but was grinding to get a bite early on Day Two.

Randy Howell only caught one fish on Day One, but was flipping all the cover he could find to get a good start on Day Two.

Spring Break allowed some younger bass fans to enjoy watching the Elite Series anglers fish.

The temperature warmed quickly on Day Two, and had anglers like Kevin VanDam shedding clothes.

VanDam moves deep into the cypress trees looking for a bite.

Duck blinds are a common site in Louisiana.

Anglers like VanDam know that duck blinds sometimes hold bass.

B.J. Haseotes makes a cast under an ancient cypress tree.

VanDam hooks up with his second keeper fish of the day.

That attempts to jump free of the hooks.

Cliff Crochet begins his day in the back of pocket.

It doesnât take long before he sets the hook, but fails to catch the fish.

Pete Ponds fishes in a grass-filled pocket.

He quickly hooks into a fish.

The fish jumps, sending a spray of water into the air.

Ponds fights the fish to the side of the boat.

The fish jumps again…

…before Ponds reels it the side…

…and jerks the fish aboard.

Ponds moves to measure the fish.

Like most of the fishing areas in the Sabine River area, there is no lack of cover to fish.

The fish is short and released as Cliff Crochet fishes in the background.

Crochet boats his first keeper.

Nearby, a sign gives away his secret fishing spot.

Crochet works his way around sloughs and creeks.

Gary Klein provides an unusual site, using a spinning rod, instead of his trademark flipping rod.

He doesn’t last long with the spinning rod, before he’s back to flipping.

Dean Rojas winds his way into a creek.

The Day One leader hooks up with a fish.

He fights the fish, forcing the fish down to keep it from jumping.

He gets the fish near the boat…

… and quickly starts to pull it in.

The fish makes a last-minute wiggle.

But is brought to hand, filling out Rojasâ limit.

He soon hooks up with another…

But this one jumps off.

And on the next cast, he hooks another. He loses it as well.

Rojas casts under a bridge.

And when he comes out the other side, he gives the camera a look.

Rojas is fishing around a variety of cover including this pile that included a shopping cart, a basketball goal, a chair, a set of stairs, a VCR player and various other things.
