Meanwhile, Elite pro Bryan Schmitt hooked a solid bass about 50 yards away in the same cove.

 Unfortunately, the fish came unzipped. “I just lost a 4- to 5-pounder,” Schmitt lamented. “There’s a lot of them in here; I don’t know why they won’t bite.”

Welcher continued to work the marina, fishing his way deeper into the cove.

 Welcher pulled on the bass for a few minutes, trying to get it to swim out of the brush pile. The fish stubbornly refused. “It’s still on there,” Welcher said. “I can feel it, but it’s hung up.”
