Sen. Ted Cruz visits Texas-based Skeeter Boats

KILGORE, Texas, – Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) visited Skeeter Boats today in Kilgore, Texas. A leading manufacturer of high-performance fishing boats, Skeeter employs 281 people in its boat and new trailer manufacturing facility. During the visit, Sen. Cruz met with Skeeter employees and toured the facility. He also spent time with Jeff Stone, Senior Vice President of Skeeter Products, Inc., discussing the Modern Fish Act and issues affecting the U.S. Marine industry.

“It was an honor to welcome Sen. Cruz to Skeeter today,” said Stone. “The recreational fishing and boating industry provides tens of thousands of U.S. jobs, including those here at Skeeter in Kilgore. The Modern Fish Act aims to protect these jobs. We appreciate the senator’s willingness to meet with us and discuss the future of the marine industry.”

The Modern Fish Act calls for updating antiquated federal fisheries policies that were never designed to manage recreational fishing. Introduced in both the House and the Senate this summer, the bills incorporate many priorities of the recreational fishing community including allowing alternative management for recreational fishing, reexamining fisheries allocations, smartly rebuilding fishery stocks, establishing exemptions for annual catch limits and improving recreational data collection. The Modern Fish Act will also provide a structure for more consistency in regulations, more access to the fisheries in federal waters and as a result, more conservation and economic benefits for the nation.
