How I will fish Ross Barnett

This week is our fourth stop on the Elite Series near Jackson, Miss., on Ross Barnett Reservoir. I have never fished here before so it is always fun to go to new lakes like this. Most guys don’t have a lot of history here so it should be anyone’s game.

Ross Barnett has many different types of vegetation and there’s no doubt that finding the right mix of grass in the right places will put you around the bass. I’ve seen gator grass, pads, hyacinth, coontail and a few other types of vegetation this week. My plan is to go find the thickest mats I can find and fish them.

Because this lake is only 30,000 acres these fish get a good deal of pressure so I figure there have to be some big ones tucked under those mats that haven’t seen a bait in a while. I’ve had some good bites doing it in practice so we’ll see. I really enjoy fishing like this, but it will be a grind.

For gear I will rely on MHX FP-936 flipping stick with 60-pound Vicious No-Fad braid and Mustad Grip Pin Max and 3X Max flipping hooks. There won’t be a lot of finesse fishing going on with the water being dirty so look for power fishing to rule the day.
