Gear Review: Z-Man Hella CrawZ

WHAT IS IT?

Z-Man Hella CrawZ

WHAT SETS IT APART?

If there could be a high-tech soft plastic craw, the Hella CrawZ is it. The bait’s appeal lies in its 10X ElaZtech structure. ElaZtech is soft and pliable and makes baits last longer before needing replacement. Most of all, the material is buoyant, making the claws float up and wave like a crawfish’s natural defensive posture. The bait sports a lifelike, segmented torso and carapace, plus lively eyes, antennae and twin flapper claws. The 4-inch Hella CrawZ is available in 10 color patterns.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Hella CrawZ is versatile, excelling as a swim jig trailer and flipping bait. For the jig, the claws flap wildly on the fall and retrieve. For flipping, the fewer appendages allow the bait to enter and come out easier without hanging up or appearing unnatural to bass. The bait is ideal for using a stout, 3/0 or 4/0 straight-shank hook for better hooking ratios.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

The added buoyancy from ElaZtech noticeably makes the Hella CrawZ truly lifelike, with the bait floating upright off the bottom, craws waving to trigger the predator instinct of the bait. You can get reaction strikes from a finesse bait, which is unique. The versatility of the bait gets another nod, as it’s dually suited for flipping and as a swim jig trailer. In that application, the ElaZtech adds buoyancy to the overall package, adding a different action for wary fish as the bait moves through the water column. Pack a bag in your boat and they’ll last all day, another plus.
