Gear Review: SEVIIN GF Baitcaster

WHAT IS IT?

SEVIIN GF Baitcasting Reel

WHAT SETS IT APART?

The first release in the new SEVIIN lineup of baitcasting and spinning reels is the GF Series. The baitcasters are constructed with a strong, one-piece graphite frame and side plates, while minimizing weight with a ported aluminum spool and carbon-fiber handles. The 4+1 stainless-steel bearing system — including two Japanese stainless-steel bearings on the spool shaft — and carbon and stainless-steel drag system promotes smooth, reliable operation, while the hardened brass pinion and drive gears promote failsafe performance and durability.

HOW DO I USE IT?

With a 32mm forged aluminum spool, the SEVIIN GF Series reels hold 110 yards of 12-pound monofilament or 100 yards of 30-pound braid, while a custom-designed carbon-fiber handle with EVA grips ensures comfortable cranking. One of the impressive features is a micro-adjustable magnetic cast control that helps the user dial in maximum casting performance for their choice of line and lure. A drag adjustment that clicks like a spinning reel helps you keep track of small adjustments. Moreover, a line memo indicator dial helps you remember what line is on each reel.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

From first glance at the product line’s name, SEVIIN Reels spawns intrigue. Breaking it down, the Roman numeral for the number 7 (VII) hides in plain sight. Much more than a word play, this references the seven (plus) decades of design and manufacturing prowess displayed by parent company St. Croix. Privately owned by the Schluter family since 1977, St. Croix has long set the standard for customer service — a peace-of-mind benefit that backs the new family of SEVIIN Reels.
