Dialing in the bluegill spawn

Pro angler Andy Montgomery said bass hanging around bluegill beds have gotten harder to catch due to increased pressure. Photos by Gary Tramontina

Pros are pros because they can dial in a pattern better than 99.5 percent of other anglers. They know when it’s happening, when it’s not and how to milk it for everything it’s worth. But it goes a step further than that. Pros are also able to place a pattern into a larger context and understand how the pattern is performing across years as its prevalence grows or wanes. As anglers, we count on that insight to help our own tournament fishing. We hear a lot about how great patterns and techniques can be, yet very little about the fading of those patterns and techniques within a context of pressured, educated bass.
