Gear Review: Z-Man ChatterBait Elite EVO

WHAT IS IT?

Z-Man ChatterBait Elite EVO

WHAT SETS IT APART?

This high-performance iteration from the proven ChatterBait lineup is designed around a stout 5/0 custom heavy-duty needlepoint black nickel hook. An all-new hybrid molded split grip and wire keepers securely hold all types of soft plastic trailers with easy rigging. Highly detailed, pro-designed head paint schemes and skirt color patterns and oversized, lifelike 3-D eyes add strike appeal. Stainless steel blades are offered in plated, painted and glitter-coated finishes. A patented direct head-to-blade connection and trademarked hex-shaped ChatterBlade impart a unique action. Available in 3/8- and 1/2-ounce weights and 12 color schemes.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Elite EVO’s blade-to-jig head is angled to maximize oscillation, and the random wandering movements are made possible by the lure’s blunt nose, convex topside channels and side flanges. All that allows the bait to hunt freely and erratically in a loose, free-flowing action. No two casts produce the same action, a huge plus when encountering pressured bass. The “custom” in the hook description is highlighted by lengthening the shaft a mere 1/4 inch, putting enough distance between head and hook point to create a strong pivot point. When the lure gets hung up, the pivot point makes it easy to free the lure.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Does the world need another Z-Man ChatterBait? Of course it does, after years of testing and tweaking went into the Elite EVO. I call it a high-performance version of the ChatterBait lineup. With every cast, the lure gets off track unpredictably and then comes back to center, and the blade begins clacking soon as the bait lands in the water. ICAST 2023’s “Best Freshwater Hard Lure” is indeed worthy of the accolade.
