Gear Review: SPRO JC Elite

WHAT IS IT?

SPRO JC Elite

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Built with durable, lightweight GV-5H resin frames, the JC Elite reels include nine ball bearings and hold 120 yards of 12-pound line. Weighing 7.9 ounces, the reel is easy on the hands but tough on the fish with a maximum drag setting of 20 pounds. The reel’s easily recognized reel speed identification system utilizes green handle tips for a 5.6:1 gear ratio, purple for 6.6:1, red for 7.3:1 and orange for 8.1:1.

HOW DO I USE IT?

We hear folks joke they’d rather be lucky than good, but serious anglers know success demands consistency. That certainly applies to the mechanics of pitching, skipping, casting, etc., but ergonomics also play a role here. That was the idea behind SPRO’s new JC Elite Reels — sturdy, dependable baitcasters built to Jason Christie’s exacting standards. Most noticeably, each reel handle comes with a specific color-coded knob correlating to a different gear ratio so anglers can quickly identify which speed each reel offers.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Fishing requires many different movements, but whether it’s comfort, muscle memory or a combination of both, being able to count on the same “feel” each time is key. That was Christie’s thought behind the SPRO JC Elite reel. As he notes, he always wanted a consistent sizing for reels with every gear ratio he would need. Constantly changing reels throughout a day of fishing would require different hand placement and grip, but this new lineup creates the consistency Christie wanted. From throwing jerkbaits, to working frogs over mats, to flipping brush, this uniformity will minimize fatigue and maximize efficiency.
