Gear Review: FishLab BBZ Bio-Rat

WHAT IS IT?

FishLab BBZ Bio-Rat

WHAT SETS IT APART?

FishLab Tackle partnered with accomplished lure designer Bill Siemantel of BBZ Baits to create a buzzbait style topwater with a legit big-fish pedigree. Offered in a 7 1/2-inch, 1 1/2-ounce size and magnum 10-inch 2 1/2-ounce size, this bait is made with custom spinning feet that create the kind of splashing and gurgling that attracts big fish. Available in five colors, the FishLab Bio-Rat will feature tournament grade black nickel BKK treble hooks (size 2 on the 7 1/2-inch model, 1/0 for the 10-inch) to ensure that whatever bites stays buttoned.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Fished fast or slow, on a straight wind, walk-the-dog, spitting or dead stick presentation, this floating bait sports a realistic, replaceable tail that taunts followers with convincing appeal. On a straight retrieve, the BBZ Rat’s spinning legs kick up a huge wake, which matches the frantic appearance of a terrified rodent scrambling for safety. Placing the hooks forward of the paddling feet and lifelike tail, BioLab avoids any entanglements and ensures consistent fish-tempting action.

HOW MUCH?

$21.99 (7 1/2-inch), $24.99 (10-inch)

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Even a casual glance reveals the incredible detail effort invested into this bait. From fur texture, to whiskers, clawed toes and a menacing toothy snarl, the BioLab BBZ Bio-Rat presents a realistic profile. The narrow, downward sloping head not only matches the form of a live rat, it helps the bait track smoothly and push its way through sparse surface debris. Most impressively, BioLab has kept the cost of this well-designed bait within reach of even modest budgets.
