Gear Review: Daiwa Steez SV

WHAT IS IT?

Daiwa Steez SV

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Available in 7.8:1 and 8.5:1 gear ratios with left- and right-hand models, the Daiwa Steez SV’s centerpiece is the exclusive Hyperdrive Design, which allows for a smooth retrieve and powerful winding performance. Essential to this design is the Hyperdrive Digigear, made with larger teeth in the traction wheel for more efficient power transfer with reduced gear noise. The Hyperdrive Design includes another impressive element — the Hyperdrive Double Support, in which the pinion gear mounting includes a ball bearing on both sides. This ensures more evenly powered handle transmission.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Expanding the popular Steez line that was introduced in the spring of 2006, Daiwa bills the new Steez SV as the finest baitcasting reel ever built. Packing Daiwa’s newest technologies and features into a compact magnesium frame with magnesium side plate, one of the biggest advancements the Steez SV brings to the table is a redesigned T-Wing System (TWS), which reduces line friction during the cast with a broadened line guide (top of the “T”) and then dropping the line into a more controlled channel (the leg of the “T”) on the retrieve. Daiwa improved this popular feature by making the T-Wing System smaller and more streamlined.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Daiwa characteristically pays close attention to performance details, as evidenced by moving the 90 mm swept handle closer to the reel. This shortens the torque on the gears and bearings for smoother, more durable operation. Daiwa also empowers the angler to put the brakes on whatever bites with the Ultimate Tournament Drag (UTD), which blends smooth, low startup inertia with superior stopping power. Utilizing advanced carbon washers, alloy and stainless-steel drag plates, along with specially designed grease, UTD ensures reliably efficient performance.
