Gear Review: Costa Mainsail

WHAT IS IT?

Costa Mainsail

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Father’s Day is coming soon, and here is a gift idea that you might not have thought of, just in time for summertime. So, stay out of the sock aisle, ditch the polo shirt idea and go with a gift the likes of which dad will wear every day.

You get a balance of tech features for active lifestyles in everyday sunglasses with the new Costa Mainsail.

Mainsail frames area designed to seal out excess light with micro-side shields and hooding around the lenses for improved vision. Improved Hydrolite grips on the nose and temples keep them firmly in place, even with sun protection oils and sweat. Eyewire drains and channels keep sweat from interfering with fit and vision. All those features set the Mainsail apart from other casual wear sunglasses without compromising desired style.

Mainsail has Costa’s premium polarized 580 lenses that manage light by absorbing harmful high-energy blue light, while enhancing reds, greens and blues and filtering out hash yellows. A C-Wall coating adds extra scratch-resistance, and a water-repelling barrier for water, sweat and for easier cleaning.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Costa has long categorized its leading frames mostly in two categories, those being active lifestyle for sun lovers, and others for serious anglers wanting technical features that keep them in the game.

As Costa celebrates 40 years of defining those niche categories, the Mainsail is the latest in the growing category of hybrid frames designed for everyday wear, while relaxing on land and ready to perform on the water. (The Aleta is a similar frame for women.)

Frames and lenses: Tiger Shark, with Gray Silver Mirror Polarized Glass (or Polycarbonate); Matte Black with Blue Mirror (or Gray) Polarized Glass, or Green Mirror Polarized Polycarbonate. Size: Large, with a Regular fit, which is a medium lens front designed for those who prefer to cover an average portion of the face.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

At first glance, the Mainsail looks like everyday sunglasses. Put them on and the world around you changes. You get the benefits and features of Costa’s definitive 100% UV protection, superior light blocking design, and Costa’s 580 lenses designed in-house for improved visibility and sun protection. Sweating and sun protection products are givens when wearing sunglasses (or they should be!), and the Mainsail stays firmly in place. The Mainsail is indeed the better of two worlds in this latest addition to Costa’s lineup of hybrid frames.
