Gear Review: BLF Instinct Rods

WHAT IS IT?

BLF Instinct Rods

WHAT SETS IT APART?

When Bassmaster Elite Brandon Lester partnered with Mustad to create his BLF (Brandon Lester Fishing) Instinct rod series, the seasoned pro delivered a 14-model lineup that covers a full range of bass fishing applications. Now, Mustad introduces a high-end subset of Lester’s creations with the BLF Instinct Elite rod series, which debuted at ICAST 2022. Each of the four new rods is built with a unique IST-1.1K blank comprising a blend of three advanced Japanese Toray carbon fibers, which ensure a light, sensitive rod with the strength needed to handle big fish.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The new series includes three heavy-power, fast-action casting rods (7-1, 7-3, 7-6) made to cover a broad range of power fishing techniques, along with 7-1 medium-power, extra-fast action spinning rod. Key features include Alps MVT (Micro Vibration Transmission) carbon composite reel seats for the extreme sensitivity needed to detect the lightest bite and featherweight Fuji T2 titanium-frame line guides with SiC rings for optimal casting distance and durability.

HOW MUCH?

$349 (starting price)

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Lester, who earned his first Bassmaster Elite Series trophy this year on Pickwick Lake, just four months after winning his first Bassmaster Opens title, has been building his own rods for more than a decade. Partnering with Mustad opened the door to share the knowledge and insight he’s amassed through trial and error. This new BLF Instinct Elite rod series offers a set of next-level tools for the serious angler.
