Welcome to fishing in the spawn

Derek Hudnall is focused on spawning beds, and that can pay off in big ways – like the 9 1/2-pounder he took the scales yesterday.

However, it also can be frustrating, as he’s discovering today.

While he has two bucks in the livewell, Hudnallbhas missed several strikes.

“They’re just taking it funny,” he explained. “They’re just grabbing half the worm.”

That weird bite cost him a big female a few minutes ago. The fish gave itself away when it swirled in the bed, and it picked up the pro’s bait when it was offered.

But it came unzipped.

“I felt it for a second, Hudnall said. “I don’t know if I got a hook in it, but I definitely spooked it.”
