Water level nerves

Yesterday Randy Howell told me the success of his pattern is contingent on the water level remaining steady. As in not dropping. That makes sense, especially for those anglers fishing in ultra-shallow water. Less water pulls bass out of all that productive hay grass and other bass-heavy vegetation.

Today it looks like Howell gets his wish. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers web site shows Sam Rayburn’s level holding steady at 162.86 MSL. That is a 1.54 MSL drop since Wednesday. The future generation schedule was not posted to the site.

On the other side of the spectrum are the deep water anglers. Not many of them, but enough to likely want some current. Sam Rayburn does not have a huge hydroelectric power plant like those found on Southern lakes. That makes the bass here, especially in summertime, less driven to bite on a generating schedule. Here, it’s more about wind-driven current. There is plenty of that today and likely into the weekend.
