Too many, not enough

Catching 100 bass sounds like a dream day of fishing, right? Not so if you are fishing on Lake Travis for a coveted berth in the sport’s world championship and more.

Here we have heard of triple-digit catches by the anglers on a given day. Making the 14-inch minimum is easy. What is not easy is adding much needed kickers to the livewell.

“During practice, I could pull up on a spot and catch bass after bass for 30 minutes,” said Jacob Wheeler.

He added this comment.

“So what it’s going to come down to is catching quality over quantity.”

That’s easier said than done around here. How in the world do you selectively avoid catching quantity over quality?

Wheeler plans to do what he does best. He didn’t need to even go into detail with me. For Wheeler, that means dialing into offshore bass using his electronics. Video game fishing, as it became known at the 2017 Elite Series event he won on Cherokee Lake, allows the angler to focus on specific fish.

So the open question is this.

Will electronics play a key role for helping anglers selectively choose quality over quantity?
