Spohrer with No. 1

After sitting on Spohrer for about 35 minutes and getting close to leaving, Gerald caught his first keeper. It was in the 2 1/2 pounders range, which is a fantastic start in this area.

He followed that up with a 13-incher. And on the next cast he hooked up and broke off.

“That was either a redfish or a 6-pounder,” Spohrer said.

He wasn’t as messed up about losing the fish as he was the crankbait he was throwing. It’s a WEC 1, a custom made square bill from Ed Chambers. He only has two. And since Chambers passing recently, the cost of those baits have risen to $100 a pop.

Spohrer, though, has some things working. A few more like the first and he could be golden.
