New York’s record smallmouth?

New York’s record smallmouth bass is shared by two men and weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces. It’s the most recent one that’s of particular interest here. It was caught on August 28, 2016, from the St. Lawrence River.

While yesterday’s big bass – a 6-12 caught by Brett Hite – was a lunker smallmouth by anyone’s standards, it’s didn’t approach that 8-4 mark. However, the record does indicate it’s the right place and the right time for a whale of a smallmouth bass to be caught during this tournament. And Jacob Powroznik approached that mark in practice when he landed a 7-pound, 9-ounce smallmouth.

“It was the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen,” Powroznik said Wednesday. “You’ll see some 7s weighed-in this week, and you’ll see an abundance of 6-pounders. This place is absolutely unbelievable.”
