Luck of the draw

Yesterday Mark Davis told me this tournament is “a game of inches.”

“The way my fish, well, our fish, were positioned made it all about the line of retrieve.”

Davis is referring to his shared water with Keith Poche.

Translated, the game of inches and line of retrieve are one in the same. How the lure tracks across a fish-holding piece of cover makes all the difference. The cast gets wasted if the retrieve tracks the lure just inches off the sweet spot.

Another big part of this game that sometimes gets ignored as priority is boat draw.

This week, and on The Rez, getting on a key area first will be key. In other words, the earlier the better when it comes to boat number. Get there late and the spot might have been pounded by other anglers.

We already are seeing that at the Poche/Davis hole. Davis arrived first and is making the most of being lined up on the sweet spot. Score: Davis in 5th place and Poche in 12th. (Disclaimer: Standings are from BASSTrakk.)
