Lane drops a hint

Bobby Lane Jr. was upfront yesterday about what he was not doing on Lake Travis to land in second place with a limit weighing 21-2. Inside the weigh-in bag were largemouth weighing 8-8, 5-2 and 4 pounds.

“I could be way up the river flipping and casting a frog but I am not,” he told me yesterday.

“To be able to pick up a baitcaster and fish the way I like to fish, and especially in a deep, clear lake, is odd,” he said.

Lane, ever the student of the game, knew his speciality would not be in play this week. Instead he drilled down on learning new tactics in less than favorable water for him. So how is a Florida boy doing so well on a western-profile lake with clear, deep water?

“Getting a key big bite in practice was the thing. Knowing that when I caught one big one there was another with it.”

“I am learning as I go with this tactic in clearer water and it paid off,” he added.
