Keep an eye on Card

Brandon Card began the day in 11th place -9 pounds, 9 ounces, behind leader Jason Christie. He bears watching today for two reasons: 1) He said he could have weighed “a giant bag” yesterday, if he’d landed everything he hooked, and 2) Card is fishing in the same creek as tournament leader Jason Christie, way up the Sabine River.

“It’s a gnarly ride, trees and sandbars everywhere,” said Card of the trip up the Sabine. As for Card and Christie getting in each other’s way, Card said, “I don’t think so. It’s a big area. We’ve worked it out. It’s all good. He’s going on up in the creek, and I’m fishing the lower part.”

Christie mentioned having a spotted bass among the five he weighed-in yesterday. Card weighed five spotted bass on Day 1 when he totaled 7-11. “I caught a bunch of keepers,” he said. “I caught largemouths, but the spots culled the largies. I didn’t even know they were in this river. Seriously, I didn’t know.”

Card is catching most of his bass flipping and pitching jigs and soft plastics. As for that “giant bag” that he could have weighed yesterday, Card had a 4-pounder in his limit. He ticked off the estimated 3 1/2s and 3s that came unhooked near the boat. It would have put him in the 16-pound range – bigger than anything brought to the scales in this tournament so far.

So, yeah, keep an eye on Brandon Card today.
