Hite predicts shallow bite

By the end of this week, everyone will have a clear idea of what Lake Conroe’s bass are doing, whether they’re still moving into shallow water to spawn or moving deeper in a post-spawn mode. But right now, that’s a puzzle.

“Things are getting ready to change,” said Brett Hite. “It’s that time of year when fish can move up in big waves or move out in big waves. It’s been almost 90 degrees for five or six days, so they’re going to be on the move, one way or the other. You’re just trying to keep up with the fish.”

That’s what today’s final practice before the Classic is all about – keeping up with the fish. Hite doesn’t foresee a deep bite this week.

“I think 90 percent of the fish will be caught in 10 feet of water or less,” he said. “I think you’re going to see a lot of soft plastics, whether you’re skipping or pitching, whether it’s docks or a little bit of cover. And then some type of reaction bait – spinnerbait, Chatterbait or shallow crankbait.”
