Gross intercepting moving fish

A timeless angling adage says: You always want fish coming to you. That means finding a spot where you can intercept fish on their natural travel path.

Spawning season offers the most well-defined opportunities, as fish move shallow to do their thing and then fall back to deeper water’s comfort and security.

Buddy Gross has leveraged this notion and, has led the Championship Sunday field for most of the day. He’s fishing a mix of shell bars and hydrilla, but he has dialed in a productive zone close to the edge of Kissimmee grass lines.

With Drew Benton recently sight fishing his way to a 7-pounder, Gross’s advantage has narrowed to about 2 3/4 pounds.

Increasing afternoon wind will challenge the sight fishing game, but sunny conditions continue to warm the Harris Chain waters. Should Benton or another angler land on one of those magical stretches with newly arriving tanks, the leaderboard could dramatically change.

Meanwhile, Gross continues to diligently fish a pattern that yielded a pair of 5-pounders this morning. He has room to cull, so a couple more big bites could push him across the finish line.
