Crews makes critical catch

After a painfully slow morning, John Crews proved the value of patience and perseverance by dramatically changing his day with a 6-pound bass.

Crews started in the St. Johns River, but caught only a 1 1/4-pounder. Moving to Rodman Reservoir where he started the previous two days, he spent two hours seeking the deep bite before moving shallow to look for spawners.

His first pitch with a Texas-rigged Missile Baits Quiver worm tempted the big fish.

This catch was critical for Crews, as Masayuki Mastsushita and Patrick Walters — currently second and third on BassTrakk — had been steadily closing the gap. Crews started the day nearly 10 pounds ahead of Matsushita, but the Japanese rookie had pulled within 9 ounces prior to Crews’ big Day-3 catch.

Crews has done well with the afternoon bite all week, so if he can leave Rodman with a limit, or another big fish or two, he could rebuild his massive lead in the day’s latter half.
